On July 6, 2020 the Elk Rapids Village Council voted to approve a trail route through the Village of Elk Rapids as part of the Nakwema Trailway. This Village led process began last summer following the completion of preliminary design for the 11-mile trail segment of the Nakwema Trailway between Acme and Elk Rapids in June 2019.
The Village route recommendation was based on information and feedback collected through a public input process that included a public open house, online public comment period, and multiple meetings with stakeholders and adjacent landowners; as well detailed professional engineering analyses. The process was guided and informed by an in-town route committee with representatives from the Elk Rapids Trail Team, Parks & Recreation Commission, DDA, Trail Town Designation Group, Elk Rapids Rotary, Chamber of Commerce, Antrim County, Elk Rapids Township, and Village residents, and with additional support and expertise provided by Village staff, TART Trails, and Networks Northwest.
The approved route will be shared roadway through the Village. The trail will enter the Village from the west side of US-31 at South Bayshore Drive and will continue as follows:
South Bayshore Dr – Ottawa St – Oak St – River St – Cedar St – Harbor Dr – Dexter St
A map of the recommended route is available here. Additional supporting information is available on the Village’s website at: https://www.elkrapids.org/in-town-bike-route-information/.
